If there was ever one city that looked so magical at Christmas youd expect to see elves strolling along the cobbled lanes, then Brussels is it. Ranging from Gothic cathedrals and the glorious classical faades of the Royal Palace, to art nouveau and art deco houses, Brussels is one of those rare places where even a flowerpot demands closer inspection. You can imagine the effect when, in the lead-up to Christmas, these majestic old buildings are cloaked in snow and millions of little lights cast spellbinding reflections off stained glass-windows.
The Christmas Markets themselves are situated near the Grand Place, a historic square regarded as one of Europes finest and lined with ornate guild houses and renaissance faades. Many a wonderful hour can be spent here watching the jugglers and ice skaters (a special rink is built here each year) and browsing the wealth of unusual gift ideas and treats displayed by the Markets 150-plus stall holders who bring their treasures with them from all over Europe.
As well as Brussels, this festive break also includes a visit to the awesome World Heritage site of Bruges, a picture-postcard city of winding canals, atmospheric churches and historic squares. Set amidst such splendour, its no wonder the city's Christmas Markets rank amongst the worlds most enchanting. The strain of Silent Night will lead you to Market and Simon Steven squares. Here, (if you wish!) climb the 366 steps to the top of the 13th Century Belfry Tower, and be rewarded with a wonderful panorama of the shimmering Christmas Markets below.
